Mark 4:38-40. But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water. Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the water, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped and there was a great calm. Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”
The disciples had seen Me perform many miracles. They had heard Me preach parables to the people, which I then explained to them. They knew Me. They professed to believe I was the Son of God. Yet, when in the middle of a storm, in a boat in which I was also a passenger, they were afraid and believed they were going to die. Do you not see? They should have known. They should have trusted. They should have believed that if I could cure leprosy with mere words, if I could return sight to the blind by my touch, that I was Lord over all. A mere storm was nothing to Me. Yet, they doubted. They returned to their human fear, to the limitations of their human beliefs. You are in a storm. It is just beginning, it has not yet reached full force. Yet, you are already feeling rocked. You are already feeling as if you have no firm place to stand. Stand in Me. Stand with Me. Remember that I am beside you. I protect you. I guide you. Nothing will happen in your world or your life that I do not allow or direct. Will you remember all that you have experienced? Will you remember all that I have done in your life? Will you trust Me that I love my children and continue to hear and minister to them? Will you put your faith in Me? Your trust in Me? This is a true test. For all of My children. Which way will you go? Will you be as faithful as Noah when I asked him to build a boat in a world that had never seen rain? Will you be as faithful as Abraham when I asked him to sacrifice his only son — a son that they had waited decades for? Will you be as faithful as Moses when I asked him to confront Pharaoh and lead My people out of slavery in Egypt? If you cannot, where will you turn? What hope have you outside of Me? Where and when in your life has trust and faith in anything outside of Me worked out for you? Decide. Then decide to remain faithful to that decision. Faith and trust are choices. You choose to have faith. Then you choose whom or what to have faith in. You choose to trust. Then you choose whom or what to trust. And then you choose whether or not to remain faithful, to keep trusting. I have not moved. I have not changed. It is you, My children, that allow themselves to be tossed to and fro, as if in a boat in a storm. (2022)
